Omdat vs want — Dutch for kids

In Dutch we have two words for “because”:

omdat and want.

They both give a reason, but the grammar is different:

omdat → starts a subclause (bijzin) want → starts a main clause (hoofdzin)

but different word order!

1. omdat

Subclause

Meaning: because (more neutral / objective)

Grammar: starts a subclause (bijzin) → the verb goes to the end.

Hij gaat naar het feest omdat hij nieuwe mensen wil ontmoeten.

He is going to the party because he wants to meet new people.

A subclause with omdat can move:
→ Omdat hij nieuwe mensen wil ontmoeten, gaat hij naar het feest.

Because + verb at the end.
After omdat, you build a “German-style” sentence: subject + objects + verb at the end.

2. want

Main clause

Meaning: because (often more subjective / your opinion)

Grammar: starts a main clause (hoofdzin) → normal Dutch word order: subject + verb + rest.

Hij gaat naar het feest want hij wil nieuwe mensen ontmoeten.

He is going to the party because he wants to meet new people.

A main clause with want cannot normally move to the front:
❌ Want hij wil nieuwe mensen ontmoeten, gaat hij naar het feest.

Because + normal sentence.
After want, you just make a normal Dutch sentence: subject + verb + rest (no verb-at-the-end rule).

4. Meaning nuance

Objectief / subjectief

There is a small meaning difference:

omdat → more objective reason
want → more subjective justification

Hij is gezond omdat hij geen koorts heeft.

He is healthy because he has no fever. (neutral conclusion)

Hij is gezond want hij heeft geen koorts.

He is healthy because he has no fever. (more like your opinion / argument)

This nuance is subtle. Many native speakers don’t think about it — they just “feel” it.
