Why this matters: Every Dutch noun is either de (common gender) or het (neuter gender). The article affects adjective endings, pronouns and more — so getting it right is fundamental.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a way to just know which article to use?

Not 100% reliably — native speakers sometimes disagree on less common words. But the -je rule (always het) and the -ing rule (always de) are completely reliable. Learning words with their articles from day one is the most effective long-term approach.

Does the article matter in everyday speech?

Yes, because the article determines adjective endings and pronoun use. Saying 'de huis' instead of 'het huis' sounds unnatural to native speakers immediately.

What about een (a/an)?

The indefinite article een is the same for ALL Dutch nouns, regardless of gender. Only the definite articles de and het differ.
